Googoosh

Googoosh is the singer Iranian pop is measured against. Born Faegheh Atashin in Tehran in 1950, she was singing and acting alongside her father as a child, and by the 1970s she was the most imitated woman in the country, down to the short haircut that took her name. With the lyricist Ardalan Sarfaraz and the composer Hassan Shamaizadeh she made seventeen songs in that decade. After the revolution she stayed in Iran and did not sing in public for twenty-one years; she left in 2000, returned to the stage that summer in Toronto, and in 2017 toured with Sarfaraz and Shamaizadeh again as the Memory Makers.
